What can an acting coach help with during an audition?
Audition coaching can help you understand the material, make specific character and physicality choices, find the emotional life of the scene, clarify your objectives and relationships, and make adjustments that bring the performance into sharper focus. The goal isn't simply to rehearse the lines. It's to understand what you're doing well enough to actually inhabit the character.
Can you help me prepare a self-tape?
Yes. We can work through the audition before you tape, including script analysis, character choices, emotional preparation, physicality, eyelines, camera awareness, and adjustments to your performance. I can also be your reader while we work.
Do you coach live auditions as well as self-tapes?
Yes. Audition coaching can be used for self-tapes, live auditions, callbacks, chemistry reads, and other audition situations. The preparation is tailored to what the audition actually requires.
What if I have an audition with very little time to prepare?
That's okay. Same-day coaching is possible when I'm available. We can prioritize what's going to make the biggest difference in the time you have rather than trying to do an exhaustive analysis of everything.
Do you help with the physicality of an audition?
Absolutely. Physicality is often one of the most overlooked parts of an audition. We'll look at how your character moves, what the scene requires physically, and how much or how little movement actually serves the performance. The goal is to make physical choices that are specific and believable rather than simply "doing something" because you're auditioning.
Do you give actors line readings?
No. I won't tell you how to say the lines or force you into a particular performance. I'll help you understand the character, circumstances, relationships, objectives, emotions, and choices so that your performance becomes more specific and truthful.
Do you provide the reader for audition coaching?
Yes. I am typically the reader during audition coaching, so I can also respond to what you're doing and make adjustments as we work.
What's the difference between audition coaching and simply rehearsing with a reader?
A reader can help you practice the scene, but reading lines with someone doesn't necessarily make your performance better or more on target. Anyone can memorize lines. The harder and more important part is understanding the character and circumstances well enough to inhabit them.
In coaching, we'll work on the choices underneath the lines: what you want, what you're doing to get it, what you feel, how you relate to the other character, and how all of that translates into the audition.
Do you coach commercial auditions?
Yes. I work with commercial auditions as well as film, television, and theatre auditions. The approach is adapted to the particular demands of the material and the audition.
Can you help me prepare for a theatre audition?
Yes. Audition coaching is available for theatre as well as film and television. The work may differ depending on the audition, but the fundamental goal remains the same: understand the material, make strong choices, and give a specific, believable performance.
Can you help me prepare for a callback?
Yes. Callback preparation can focus on refining the choices you've already made, responding to adjustments, developing the character further, and preparing you for whatever the callback may require.
Can audition coaching help if I don't understand my character?
That's one of the main reasons to work with a coach. We'll break down the material and figure out what's actually happening beneath the dialogue: your character's circumstances, objectives, relationships, behavior, emotional life, and physical choices, so you aren't simply guessing at how to play the scene.
Will you tell me exactly how I should play the audition?
No. I'll challenge your choices, ask questions, make adjustments, and help you find what works, but I won't try to force you into a performance that isn't yours. The goal is to help you make your own choices with greater clarity and specificity.
Can I do audition coaching online?
Yes. Audition coaching is available online worldwide. We can work through the audition and make adjustments over video, including preparing for an online audition or self-tape.
Can you guarantee that I'll get a callback or book the role?
No. No coach can honestly guarantee that. Casting decisions involve many factors outside an actor's control. My job is to help you give the strongest, most specific performance you can, not promise you an outcome I can't control.
