Auditioning for a BFA program, conservatory, or college drama department is one of the most high-stakes auditions a young actor will face. The competition is significant. The preparation required is specific. And the difference between a strong audition and an average one is almost always in the depth of the work rather than the material, the school, or the nerves.
College audition prep at BLS prepares actors of any age for the specific demands of drama school and conservatory auditions, including monologue selection, deep preparation, and the kind of honest, grounded performance that gets people accepted into serious programs.

Choosing the right pieces for the audition you're targeting. Classical and contemporary. Contrasting material when required. Pieces that suit you specifically — your age, your type, your emotional range — rather than pieces you've seen work for someone else. Programs see the same twenty monologues constantly. Standing out starts with selection.
How to enter the room, how to slate, how to receive notes and adjust in real time, how to manage nerves in a high-pressure environment. The non-performance elements of a strong audition matter more than most actors realize.
Time will be devoted to running the full audition experience — slate, monologue, potential adjustment — so that when the real thing happens, it's familiar territory.
For musical theatre programs, Braden can coach vocal technique (having earned a Bachelor's degree as a vocalist) and the performance and acting of the song, finding the specific emotional and dramatic life of the material. Vocal technique is outside this scope, but for actors who have the voice and need the performance, this work is directly relevant.
A Note on Drama School Training
College and conservatory programs produce actors with varied levels of preparation for professional work. Some — like Juilliard, NYU, RADA — are genuinely excellent. Many others teach primarily theatre technique that requires significant adjustment for screen work, or teach technique so vaguely that graduates arrive at professional auditions with credentials but limited tools.

Format and Booking
College audition prep is available for actors of any age, including high school students, gap year actors, adults returning to training, and anyone auditioning for a formal program.
Option 1 - In-person: Braden's Reseda studio.
Option 2 - Online via Zoom: Full prep coaching available online, available worldwide.
Rates: $75 (30 min) / $150 (1 hour) / $225 (90 min) / $300 (2 hours)

What can you help me with for a college acting audition?
I can help with the performance itself, including monologues, scenes, script analysis, character development, emotional work, physicality, vocal choices, and making strong, specific choices that you can actually inhabit.
Can you help me choose my college audition monologues?
Yes.
If you have several options, we can evaluate them based on what gives you the best opportunity to demonstrate your abilities. If you haven't chosen your material yet, we can also discuss what you're looking for and what kinds of pieces may serve you best.
Can you help me find audition material?
Yes.
We can work from material you already have, or I can help you identify material that may be appropriate for your audition and your particular strengths.
How many monologues should I prepare?
That depends entirely on the requirements of the school or program.
Bring the audition requirements with you so we can make sure we're preparing the appropriate material rather than preparing something simply because it's a good monologue.
Can you help me with contrasting monologues?
Yes.
If an audition requires contrasting pieces, we can look at the material as a whole and make sure the pieces give you different opportunities to demonstrate your range without simply trying to make one piece "big" and the other "small."
Do I need to have my monologues memorized before coaching?
You should be as prepared as possible, but perfect memorization is not the primary goal of the coaching.
Knowing the words matters. Understanding what you're saying, why you're saying it, and what you're actually doing in the piece matters more.
Can you help me if I don't understand my monologue?
Absolutely.
That's one of the reasons to coach.
We can break down the material, examine the character and circumstances, and figure out what the character is actually doing rather than relying on vague instructions about how the piece should feel.
Can you help me make physical choices?
Yes.
Physicality is an important part of character. We can explore how the character moves, behaves, occupies space, and responds physically to the circumstances while making sure those choices serve the performance rather than becoming distracting business.
Can you help me with emotional material?
Yes.
We can work on the character's emotional experience and what makes the circumstances meaningful to them. I won't try to force you to produce an emotion on command.
Can you help with classical or Shakespearean material?
Yes.
We can work through classical language, circumstances, character, relationships, and choices so that you understand what you're saying and can actually perform it rather than simply reciting the text.
Can you help me with musical theatre auditions?
Yes, on the acting side.
I can help with acting choices, character, interpretation, physicality, and the performance of your material. If you need specialized singing or dance preparation, you'll want to work with an appropriate vocal or dance professional as well.
Can you help with auditions that include an interview?
Yes.
We can prepare for the kinds of questions and situations that may come up and work on communicating who you are without turning the interview into a memorized performance.
Can you help me prepare for multiple college auditions?
Yes.
If you're applying to several programs, we can work strategically across your auditions rather than treating every piece as an isolated performance.
Can we work online?
Yes.
College audition preparation can be done online, so you don't need to be in Los Angeles to work with me.
How far in advance should I start preparing?
As early as you reasonably can.
Starting earlier gives you more time to understand the material, develop your choices, and actually grow into the performance instead of trying to manufacture a finished audition immediately before the deadline.
That said, if your audition is coming up soon, we can still work with what you have.
What if I'm completely new to acting?
That's okay.
College audition prep isn't only for experienced actors. If you're new to acting, part of the process may involve teaching you how to approach the material and helping you understand what you're actually being asked to do.
What if I've already had years of acting training?
That's fine too.
The work is based on what you need, not on assuming that every actor needs the same instruction. We can identify what's working, what's not, and what will make the audition stronger.
Will you tell me exactly how to perform my audition?
No.
I'll help you understand the material, identify possibilities, challenge choices that aren't serving you, and develop a performance you can genuinely inhabit.
The goal isn't to have you imitate my interpretation. It's to help you become more capable of making your own strong choices.
Can you guarantee that I'll get accepted?
No.
I can help you prepare as thoroughly as possible, but no acting coach can guarantee admission. Each school makes its own decisions, and many factors are outside your control.
