A Note for Screen Actors

What does theatre audition prep include?
Theatre audition prep focuses on helping you understand the material, make strong choices, and give a performance that is appropriate for the stage.
Depending on the audition, we can work on script analysis, character, objectives, relationships, emotional life, physicality, vocal choices, memorization, monologues, scenes, and anything else the material requires.
Can you help me prepare a monologue?
Yes.
We can break down the monologue, determine what is happening moment to moment, develop the character and circumstances, and make specific choices that give the performance shape and life.
Can you help me prepare a scene for a theatre audition?
Yes.
If you're auditioning with a scene, we can work on both your individual performance and your relationship to the other character or characters in the material.
Can you help me choose a monologue?
Yes.
If you have several possibilities, we can look at them together and determine which one gives you the best opportunity to demonstrate your abilities.
If you haven't chosen one yet, we can also discuss what kind of material would be appropriate for the audition and for you.
Can you help me with physicality?
Absolutely.
Stage physicality has different demands from performing for a camera. We can work on how your physical choices communicate the character and circumstances while remaining appropriate for the size and style of the production.
Can you help me with vocal work?
Yes.
Depending on the material, we can work on vocal characterization, clarity, projection, rhythm, tone, and other choices that help the performance communicate to an audience.
Do I need to be memorized before my session?
Not necessarily.
You should be as prepared as possible, but the purpose of coaching is not simply to run lines until you can recite them.
Understanding the material and knowing what you're actually doing in the scene are more important than mechanically memorizing words.
Can you help me with emotional scenes?
Yes.
We can work on the character's emotional experience and what makes the circumstances meaningful to them without trying to force an emotion into existence.
Can you help me with Shakespeare or other classical material?
Yes.
Classical material can require a particularly careful understanding of language, circumstances, character, and style. We can work through those elements so that the language becomes something you are actually playing rather than simply reciting.
Can you help with accents for a theatre audition?
Yes.
Accent work can be incorporated into audition preparation when the role requires it. If the accent requires substantial development, dedicated accent coaching may be more appropriate.
Can theatre audition prep be done online?
Yes.
Much of the preparation can be done online, particularly script analysis, character work, emotional work, vocal work, accent work, and other aspects of performance.
Do you only work with actors auditioning for professional theatre?
No.
Theatre audition prep is available for actors auditioning for professional productions, college programs, community theatre, educational productions, and other opportunities.
Can you help with college theatre auditions?
Yes.
We can work on monologues, scenes, character choices, physicality, vocal choices, and whatever else the specific audition requires.
What if I'm auditioning for a musical?
Yes, with the understanding that acting is only one part of a musical theatre audition.
I can help with the acting and performance side of the material. If you need specialized vocal or dance instruction, you may also need a musical theatre voice or dance professional.
What if I don't understand the character?
That's something we can work on.
A character shouldn't become a collection of instructions about how to behave. We can examine the material, circumstances, relationships, psychology, and choices that allow you to actually understand and inhabit the character.
What if I don't know what choices to make?
That's fine.
You don't have to arrive with everything figured out. We can explore possibilities together and determine what makes sense for the material and for you.
Will you tell me exactly how to perform the audition?
No.
I'll help you understand the material, challenge choices that aren't working, and explore possibilities. The goal is to develop a performance you can genuinely inhabit rather than have you imitate someone else's interpretation.
How much theatre audition prep do I need?
It depends on the material and the actor.
A straightforward monologue may not require much time. A difficult scene, unfamiliar language, classical material, or a performance requiring significant physical or emotional work may require more.
Can you guarantee that I'll get the role?
No.
No coach can guarantee a casting result. Audition preparation can help you give a stronger, more informed performance, but casting decisions involve many factors outside your control.
