THE BLS TECHNIQUE

It Comes from Real Life

______________________________________________

Most acting training gives you pieces.

A method for emotional access here. A framework for script analysis there. An approach to physicality from one teacher, an approach to objectives from another. You collect techniques from multiple sources, try to stitch them together, and hope something cohesive emerges.

The BLS technique is a complete system.

Built from the ground up over nearly two decades of coaching, it covers every stage of the actor's process in a way that is clear, teachable, repeatable, and grounded in how human beings actually think, feel, and behave.

Where It Comes From

Braden Lynch spent years as a working actor in Los Angeles, training with coaches, studying methods, testing approaches on set and in auditions, and noticing what worked and what didn't.

What he found was a landscape full of:

• Vague advice dressed up as wisdom ("just be truthful," "find the moment")
• Techniques that worked in the classroom but not under audition pressure
• Methods rooted in tradition rather than reality
• Teachers who taught what they'd been taught without asking whether it was actually useful

So he built something else. A technique grounded not in acting tradition but in human psychology, in how emotions actually work, how behavior is actually generated, how people actually relate to each other and to their circumstances.

The result is a cohesive, comprehensive system taught by no one else.

What Makes It Different

It's Complete

The technique doesn't treat acting as mystical or ineffable. It treats acting as the art of honest human behavior and builds tools accordingly.

It's Clear

It's Not Dogmatic

It's Repeatable

It's Based in Psychology

It's Mental Health-First

Most techniques address part of the actor's process. The BLS technique addresses all of it: script analysis, emotional access, physical and vocal work, character development, audition preparation, and performance.

Nothing is left vague. Every tool has a name, a purpose, and a method. You will always know what you're working on and why.

You don't have to feel inspired to use this technique. It works when inspiration is absent. It works under pressure. It works consistently. Every time.

Emotional access is essential to great acting. Re-traumatization is not. The BLS technique teaches you to go deep without breaking yourself in the process.

Where most acting coaches require "my way or the highway," the BLS technique accepts that there are many roads to success with any performance. No one is forced to work the way Braden works, but doing so typically results in a better product.

The Process

Investigation

Everything in a person's history that is relevant to this moment. If you're at an audition, your lunch from two weeks ago is probably not on this list. Your time in classes, in coachings, at other auditions, on sets, etc., are all very relevant.

Personalization

Opinion(s) of Them

Exploration

Relevant History

Potential Futures

Understand what you've been given. Script analysis rooted in human psychology and story structure. What is the scene? How does it fit into the story? What does the character want? What's at stake? What's really happening beneath the surface? For a detailed breakdown of this process, see Script Analysis.

Move from intellectual understanding to felt experience. Connect the scene's circumstances to something real in your own emotional life. Not through re-traumatization, but safely chosen and vividly visualized moments from your real life, imagination, or a combination of the two. This is the heart of the BLS technique and the area where most training falls shortest. The Know Your Self workbook is designed to develop this capacity between sessions.

Commit to your choices. Inhabit the character's headspace. React to what's actually happening around you. Try new choices. Discover things. Repeat them, vary them, find what's alive. Rinse and repeat. Failing to explore typically results in actors becoming stuck in one way of doing the scene, which typically makes them un-directable.

A person's relevant history to a moment sets up in their minds both short and long-term possible futures. Best case and/or worst case. At the audition, you may be thinking about the casting director being incredibly nice, or being horrible, or booking the job, or being dropped by your agent. What your brain focuses on will influence your emotions and your behavior.

We all have very specific opinions about every person we encounter, whether we know them well or not. You even have an opinion of Braden in this moment. Your opinion of a casting director in a coaching will influence your behavior.

The BLS acting technique is comprised of three main pillars:

______________________________________________

Each pillar of the BLS acting technique has within it four psychological elements:

Injunction

What you want another person to do or not do. It can be strong or weak, it can be chased after or buried deeply, but it's always present. In that audition, some possibilities may be "Give me a shot," "Don't yell at me," or "Play with me."

______________________________________________

Spending time fleshing out the four elements in your Investigation will make Personalization and Exploration much easier and more specific, and therefore more truthful and compelling.

Why Psychology

Acting is the art of honest human behavior. Human behavior is governed by psychology.

Most acting training ignores this. It teaches technique as though actors are instruments to be tuned. As though the right series of physical and vocal adjustments will produce truthful performance.

The BLS technique starts from the inside. From how emotions are actually generated, how memory and imagination interact, how desire and obstacle produce behavior, how relationship dynamics create subtext. When you understand the psychology, the technique becomes logical rather than mystical. Repeatable and reliable rather than accidental and elusive.

Mental Health First

You cannot sustainably access deep emotion by depleting yourself.

The BLS technique teaches emotional access that is both powerful and safe. This means:

• Triggering methods that don't require re-traumatization
• Boundaries around vulnerable work that protect the person doing it
• Recognition of when to push and when to pull back
• Permission to say "I'm not going there today" without shame

Suffering doesn't make you a better actor. It just makes you suffer. The BLS technique is built on the belief that you can do honest, vulnerable, breathtaking work without compromising your mental health in the process.

How to Learn It

The BLS technique is taught through:

Weekly Acting Classes — the technique in action, applied to scene work in a small, collaborative group

1-on-1 Growth Coaching — one-on-one, personalized application of the technique to your specific work

Online Coaching — the full technique, delivered via Zoom, available worldwide

The BLS Acting BooksBeing Human: An Actor's Guide to Greatness is the complete written articulation of the technique. The three companion workbooks support specific aspects of the work between sessions.
