How Can I Get Acting Auditions Without an Agent?
Getting a rep can be hard. Getting auditions can be easy.
AUDITIONING
Here's something a lot of actors don't realize: you don't need an agent to start auditioning. Especially in the early stages of your career, there are real, legitimate opportunities available to actors who are willing to find them and go after them.
1. Actors Access (for Scripted Film & TV)
Actors Access is the primary platform for self-submitting on scripted film and television projects. It's run by Breakdown Services (the same company that distributes major casting notices to agents and managers) and it allows actors to submit themselves directly for projects that accept self-submissions.
What you need:
A profile with a strong headshot
A resume
A reel (even audition tapes help)
Basic membership is free, though uploading photos and reels costs a small fee. It's an essential tool for any actor pursuing scripted work.
2. Casting Networks & Casting Frontier (For Commercials)
If you're interested in commercial work, Casting Networks and Casting Frontier are the primary platforms. Commercial casting works somewhat differently from scripted TV and film. These platforms are widely used by commercial casting directors and are worth having profiles on if that market interests you.
3. Student Films
Student films are genuinely one of the best opportunities for actors without credits.
Film students at schools like USC, UCLA, NYU, and AFI need actors for their thesis films and class projects. Bonus: they aren't necessarily low-quality productions. Film students are often shooting on professional equipment with serious ambitions.
Benefits:
Real on-camera experience
Footage for your reel
Professional relationships with future filmmakers
Low-pressure environment to develop your skills
How to find them: Check Actors Access, local film school bulletin boards, and social media groups for actors in your city.
4. Make Your Own Work
This is increasingly how careers get started. You don't need anyone's permission to create content.
Write and produce a short film. Create a web series. Shoot scenes with other actors from your class. Make a short that showcases exactly what you do well.
This approach gives you:
Creative control
Reel footage on your terms
A demonstration of initiative and resourcefulness
Something specific to submit to festivals and online platforms
The barrier to entry has never been lower. A decent camera, some lighting, and a commitment to quality is enough to create work worth watching.
5. Theater Auditions
If theater is your goal, open calls and Equity Principal Auditions (EPAs) are available to non-union actors and are worth pursuing.
Even if your goal is film and television: theater can build certain skills (confidence, text analysis, commitment to a role) but it won't necessarily build your on-camera reel/skills or connect you to the film and TV industry. Pursue it if it interests you, but be clear-eyed about what it will and won't do for your screen career.
The Bottom Line
An agent opens doors, but you don't need one to start working.
Build your profile on Actors Access. Pursue student films. Make your own projects. Get on camera as much as possible so that when you do get in front of an agent, you have something to show.

What to Avoid
There are plenty of websites advertising "casting calls" that are either scams or low-quality opportunities not worth your time. As a general rule:
If a casting website requires you to pay a large upfront fee to "be seen," be skeptical
If auditions are held at someone's home or apartment, avoid it
If the posting feels vague, urgent, or too good to be true, it probably is
